" Why should I fear in
times of trouble, when the iniquity of those who cheat me surrounds me, those
who trust in their wealth and boast of the abundance of their riches? Truly no man can ransom another, or give to
God the price of his, for the ransom of their life is costly and can never
suffice, that he should live on forever and never see the pit.” Psalm 49:5-9
As I thought on this, I might have focused on the
beginning of the passage; on how those who are rich, as verse 6 states, trust
in and boast about their riches but instead my thoughts were on the latter part
of the verse. Plainly the Psalmist understood the inability of those riches to
satisfy redemption, but I wonder did he know the price the Redeemer would pay? How could he? How much more should this ring true and powerful for us who look back to the cross! (On a side note, it is passages like this that show us the inspiration of God in His Word.)
Death is inevitable and inescapable "…it
is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment…). Hebrews 9:27. Statistically, 10 out of 10 people die. This passage also anticipates the second death of
hell (Rev. 20:11-15), except for those who by faith have repented of their sin
and embraced the only ransom which satisfied God, that being the death, burial
and resurrection of His own dear Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. (I Cor. 15:3, 4)
